Course Description:

Intensive 4 day Tiling

Working through this programme will give you the opportunity to develop basic tiling skills and the confidence to apply them in your own home or a work place.  You will carry out practical project work to apply what you have learnt.  The experience will encourage you to seek employment and/or further qualifications in this type of work.
 
1. The student will be able to plan and prepare a work area in accordance with the work specifications.

· Estimating and scheduling the work
 
· Tools required for the job, kit to include appropriate tools from the following:

2. Will beable to use the correct equipment to cut and shape tiles
Surface preparation
·Tiling design avoids small cuts, positioned around fittings to minimise cutting ·
 
Marking on wall to enable a guide for tiles

3. Apply wall and floor tiles to an acceptable finish.

 
Techniques for level tiling, e.g. use of level baton attached temporarily to wall
·Trowel selection

Adhesive application

Pressing firmly into place and twisting slightly
Use of spacers

Tile laying technique

Straight/curved cutting
Drilling and snipping tiles

Cutting methods

Wiping off excess using damp cloth
Waiting for adhesive to dry then grout

Post tiling procedure

Cleaning off any dry adhesive
Wipe grouting mix over tiles and well into gaps using rubber squeegee
Wipe of excess and use damp cloth on finger to obtain professional finish
Cleaning tiles with glass cleaner when dry

Surface is smooth

  • Surface is free of loose material

  • Surface is made watertight by using diluted PVA
     

  • Plasterer’s trowel (shower and bathroom)

  • Separated tiling trowel (kitchen and work surfaces)

  • Small container for water/PVA mixture

  • Waterproof tiling adhesive

  • Spacers

  • Waterproof grouting

  • Tile cutter

  • Tile snipper or pliers

  • Tile saw

  • Masonry drill bit and drill

  • Sticky tape

  • Coarse flat file
